Cloisonné

Cloisonné is a unique art form that originated in Beijing during the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368). In the period titled “Jingtai” during the Ming Dynasty, the emperor who was very much interested in bronze-casting techniques, improved the skill of color making, and created the bright blue that appealed to the Oriental people. After improving color processing, most articles for his daily use were made of cloisonné; at that time cloisonné became popular among the common people; and they called it “Jingtai Blue”. During the reigns of Emperors Kangxi and Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty, cloisonné was improved and reached its artistic summit. Colors were more delicate, filigrees more flexible and fluent, and scope was enlarged. Present-day production, with Beijing as the leading center, stresses the adding of ornamental beauty to things that are useful. Today cloisonné technique is associated with the sculpture of wood, jade, ivory and lacquer. Cloisonné art is exported to many countries as a favorite medium for ornaments. Favorites can get any articles they like as its variety is so rich. The artifacts include vases, plates, jars, boxes, tea sets, lamps, lanterns, tables, stools, drinking vessels and small articles for the desk, and so on.
